President’s Letter – March 2018

Dear LGS Members:

February was a productive month.  We had a great night learning about the geology and wine of France.  Many thanks to Dr. Raphaël Gottardi for organizing and leading the event.  We had 27 attendees to share his expertise and wine tasting.  Mr. Bill Finley organized a silent mineral auction, which was also successful.  Thanks to your attendance and participation, we were able to make a small profit for the event.  This will be used to help with the cost of student lunches.

Our next meeting will be held March 21 at the Petroleum Club.  We will have joint meeting with SWLGS and enjoy a presentation from Carl Fiduk.

As we discussed at the February meeting, LGS is also feeling the effects of the economic downturn.  We don’t have the corporate sponsorship we typically had in the past.  Therefore, we are asking you – our members – to help support our student lunches.  When you come in to lunch, we will ask if you’d like to sponsor a student lunch for an additional $20.  We will pair you with a student for the luncheon.  We tried this for the February meeting and it was successful.  Almost all of our student lunches were sponsored.  Thank you to those who gave last time – you will be recognized later in the Bulletin.  We are hopeful we can get full sponsorship for our March meeting.  Don’t forget you can purchase tickets for lunch on our website!
We are finalizing our plans for a field trip to New Orleans.  Our annual crawfish boil is sneaking up on us.  It is scheduled for April 21.  More information for each of these events will be shared via the LGS website and email when available.

The annual “Dino Dig” at Broadmoor Elementary is being held on March 20th.  This is a great event that the students wait for all year.  If you’re interested in helping out, please contact Julia Battle.

Are you interested in becoming a board member for LGS?  Now is your chance!  We are looking for volunteers for several positions: director, president-elect, vice president, and secretary.  Please let a current board member know if you’re interested.  We will collect all the names and put a ballot together for next month.  Don’t delay!
Students: don’t forget to submit your application for the Jack Shirley Memorial SIPES scholarship.  You should find a link to the application in the LGS Bulletin and on the website.  The application deadline is April 16, 2018.

I’ll see you at lunch!
