April 2019 President’s Column

Dear All,

I would like to thank all of you for welcoming the visiting high school students at our last luncheon. I hope they enjoyed the event, and got a chance to learn about earth sciences and our society. I would like to send a particular thank you to the UL Lafayette AAPG student chapter and DrillingInfo for covering the cost of the student lunches – your support is greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately, we had to cancel our field trip to the Teche-Vermilion water district due to low enrollment. We are not sure if the low enrollment reflects the lack of interest in the field trip itself, or if the dates conflicted with other events that day, but in any case, we would like to hear it from you. Please give us your feedback. It’s now two years in a row that LGS had to cancel the field trip – an event that has always been well attended in the past.

There will be no student poster presentation this month because our students are on Spring Break. However, there will be an excellent talk by one of our alumni, Richard Ball, who will talk about the Eagle Ford and Austin Chalk.

Finally, as tax season is upon us, I would like to encourage you to make donation to the various endowment set up between our society and the UL Lafayette Foundation, such as the Bill Paine Endowed Scholarship and the Joe Battle Memorial Geology Scholarship. Your generosity will provide scholarships for students in need and help them to pursue their career in the field of Earth Sciences.

My best,
