President’s Column – September 2019

After what I hope was a nice summer break for everyone, it is Geology season once again. Welcome back.

If you don’t know me, my name is Trevor Casper, and I am a petroleum geoscientist who has had the good fortune of working much of my professional career right here in Lafayette. I started my career in Calgary in the late 80’s with Unocal, and transferred to their Lafayette office in 1992. At the time, I thought I would likely stay in Lafayette for a few years and then move back, or move on. Nearly 30 years later, it’s obvious my initial thinking was wrong. I’ve been blessed to find a home, both personally and professionally, here in Lafayette. I’m looking forward to being the President of the Society for the next year, and I hope that we have some success in the core mission of the Society, which is to advance Geology as a science and a profession. One of the ways we can do that is to maintain as robust a membership roll as possible, and I would encourage you all to be advocates for the benefits of membership in the Society.

One of the recurring benefits is our lunch and learn program. Our president-elect, Joe Morris, is working diligently to secure an interesting and educational line-up of speakers for the season ahead. We will update you on the speaker schedule as details become available. Please note that these lunchtime presentations qualify as continuing education credits. Receipts are always available at the door to validate your attendance.

Our annual BBQ ice-breaker will take place on Thursday, September 26th, 2019 at Dwight’s Restaurant, from 5:30 to 9:30 pm. Please purchase your tickets on the LGS website. I hope to see you all there.

Also, the 2019 GCAGS meeting, now referred to as GEOGULF 2019, takes place in Houston from October 23rd to 25th. If you have any question or comments please feel free to reach out to me or any of the officers in the Society.

Best regards,
Trevor Casper
